Then, That’s What We Called Music [Reflections]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on November 14, 2010

Ten years ago today (11/14/00), the fifth compilation in the United States’ Now series was released. The fun thing about these CDs is that there are few others that accurately provide a snapshot into what was hot at the time of their release.

For example, the millennium teen pop explosion was still in full effect, with Now 5 featuring contributions from a still-together NSYNC and 98°; a pre-reality show Jessica Simpson; the still-relevant SoulDecision and BBMak; pre-Dancing with the Stars Aaron Carter; the 5-guy version of the Backstreet Boys; a peaking in popularity Britney Spears; and actress/MTV VJ/singer Mandy Moore. Destiny’s Child was still a group, though “Jumpin’, Jumpin'” was the second video featuring the controversial new line-up. Sisqo was the hottest act in R&B, and a post-Xscape and pre-Real Housewives of Atlanta Kandi was making her solo debut. Mya, also prior to her stint on DWTS, found one of her biggest solo hits included on this disc, as did Janet Jackson, who had just starred in the sequel of Eddie Murphy‘s The Nutty Professor.

It’s pretty amazing how many of these artists, either still in groups or as solo stars, are active today. It’s also interesting to note that the bubblegum tone of this disc is still prevalent today, though it has evolved — borrowing from the decade in between in which hip-hop and dance-flavored music rose in popularity, while more middle-of-the-road pop and R&B got pushed aside.

What are your favorites on this disc? What was missing? Share this and other thoughts on music from late 2000 in the comments.
