Summer Songs of 2010 [Opinion]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on June 6, 2010

By now, you’ve seen and felt hints of summer. But the warm and humid weather, and the skimpy clothing aren’t the only signs that the season is upon us.

We are, of course, talking about the songs that will burn up pool parties, road trip mix CDs and concert halls across the nation. Each year, one lucky song unofficially gets crowned the Song of Summer. We’d like to present a few of our picks for this year’s title.

Kelly Rowland

Though Beyoncé may have earned Song of Summer honors for 2003’s “Crazy in Love,” her Destiny’s Child bandmate is about to shine like a ray of sun with her latest David Guetta pairing, “Commander.”

“The Club is Alive”
The British boy band is making its way stateside. While the former X Factor runner-ups record their second album, they’ve blessed us with this banger that pays homage to The Sound of Music.

Christina Aguilera feat. Nicki Minaj
Like gutter pop? Xtina teams up with rap’s reigning queen, Nicki Minaj, to serve up a healthy dose of “down there” dirrty.

“Your Love is My Drug”
Don’t fight it — you know the song is catchy and you occasionally find yourself singing it.

Usher feat. Will.I.Am
Do we really have to explain this inclusion? It’s only the hottest song on the planet right now and it’s showing no sign of slowing down.

David Guetta feat. Chris Willis, Fergie & LMFAO
“Gettin’ Over You”
Though “When Love Takes Over” was surely one of last year’s biggest hits, this cut is a strong outing as well. We can already picture Vegas pool partiers’ reaction to the introductory bass line: a few “whoo!” screams and accompanying headbanging.

Alicia Keys
“Un-thinkable (I’m Ready)”
Though Ms. Keys did the unthinkable — getting engaged and ruining the hopes and dreams of so many men — we think she can redeem herself with this quiet storm offering for those hot summer nights.

Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg
“California Gurls”
Even though “girls” is spelled wrong, the song is oh-so-right for summer with its nods to Daisy Dukes, gin n’ juice, and a West Coast way of life.
