Play These Instead – Darude’s “Sandstorm” [iTune-Ups]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on May 28, 2010

The Perpetrator:
“Sandstorm” by Darude

The Offense: The instrumental trance anthem has become the go-to “techno” song for DJs trying to club it up for their patrons, resulting in heavy rotation, despite the song being more than a decade old.

The Solution: Play these instead …

  • Voodoo & Serano: “Blood is Pumping” – “Sandstorm’s” darker cousin provides pulsating bass and synthesized acoustics for a more urgent, more pounding floor-filler.
  • Dirty Vegas: “The Brazilian” – The echoing bass line reverberates over a melody that’s equal parts exotic and inviting.
  • Laut Sprecher feat. Katie Skate: “Omnibus” – More whimsical than “Sandstorm,” but sonically similar. For those reasons, we’ll accept the child-like gibberish present throughout most of the track.
  • Darude: “Music” – Moody trance made by the master. At least a few beats per minute faster than Darude’s signature song, “Music” challenges dancers to keep up.
