Giant Records [Things We Miss]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on May 20, 2010

Debut:
“Voices That Care” Gulf War single (1991)

Last Heard From: Its absorption into the Warner Bros. company (2001)

Why We Love It: Though the label was home to many country, hip-hop and alternative acts, Giant was particularly successful at launching or developing the careers of several That’s My Jam artists, including Miki Howard, Jade, Tara Kemp, P.O.V., Jeremy Jordan, MC Hammer, Army of Lovers, Good 2 Go, i5 and Color Me Badd. Giant also released both Beverly Hills, 90210 soundtracks and the soundtrack to New Jack City.

What Happened? Giant apparently had a problem sustaining some of its roster’s success beyond their debut albums, notably Kemp, who never released follow-ups. After several name changes and a staff overhaul, the label folded into its parent company, Warner Bros.

Will We See It Again? Probably not, though Jive Records seems to have filled the void with artists including Usher, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Jordin Sparks and Ciara.
