Play These Instead – Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison” [iTune-Ups]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on March 5, 2010

The Perpetrator: “Poison” by Bell Biv DeVoe (or BBD)

The Offense: The grooves on this new jack swing record have become worn thanks to DJs’ inability to think outside the box.

The Solution: Play these instead …

  • Guy: “Wanna Get With U”Aaron Hall‘s “You got, what I want” rivals Ricky Bell‘s “It’s drivin’ me outta my mind,” and the beat on this song is both fast and furious.
  • Today: “Why You Get Funky on Me” – The melody might not be as hard as “Poison’s,” but it’s continuous and offers a sing-along opportunity with the repetitive “Why you get funky on me?”
  • Bell Biv DeVoe: “Gangsta” – A hot and heavy rhythm similar to “Poison” drives the track, but we’re sold on Michael Bivins‘ “If she catches you with another lover, you’re a dead muthaf*cka.”
  • Johnny Gill: “Rub You the Right Way” – This song is pure funk and just doesn’t get played enough. The bassline may even be stronger than “Poison’s” and the stop-and-go beat provides plenty of entry points to start dancing.
