Kaci Battaglia – Bring It On [Reviews]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on September 29, 2010

Eight years ago, at the tail end of the millennium’s teen pop wave, Kaci Battaglia dropped her debut disc, I’m Not Anybody’s Girl. Perhaps because the market was so saturated with acts and was tiring of the teen craze, the record failed to make much of an impact, though it clearly showcased Battaglia’s budding talent.

After a lengthy hiatus, Kaci returned in 2009 with “Crazy Possessive,” which lit up Billboard’s Dance/Club Play chart and ignited the fire that lead to her latest disc, Bring It On.

Bring It On includes “Body Shots,” an upbeat pop number that finds Kaci cooing her way through party girl lyrics such as “Whip it up, lick it up, suck it down.” The ode to active drinking pairs her with Ludacris, whose energetic and humorous flow fits perfectly with this version of the song.

Ironically, “Tool” is the anti-drinking song, or, more appropriately, the anti-frat boy song, as Battaglia lists the unappealing characteristics of a particular guy. Words of warning pepper “Captain Save a Ho,” an updated cousin to Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison” that embraces an echoing stutter to drive the message home.

“Seeing You Tonight” is the sole ballad on the collection, but one that’s more than worthy of inclusion. Kaci’s poem of a dream lover is at once tender, but surprisingly emotional, and overall controlled and vocally impressive.

Caribbean drums sprinkled throughout “PartyAHolic” make the smooth dance/urban hybrid bounce, while “Bring It On” finds Kaci at her most aggressive. Battaglia rocks out while simultaneously (and gracefully) singing confidence — and some adult language!

Bring It On proves that Kaci’s time away from the music biz wasn’t wasted. She clearly studied hook-writing and vocal control, both of which cater to the album’s guilty pleasure and true-artist offerings. The album offers cohesion not felt on many recent pop discs and secures its longevity thanks to Battaglia pouring her heart and soul into this long overdue compilation.
