The R&B teen/tween set has been relatively dormant the last few years. Besides a few hit-or-miss singles, the genre has relied heavily on adult acts to keep the kids musically interested.
We think that’s about to change! Meet what we hope is the first wave of new young R&B stars that will be earning grown-up respect, charting on 106 & Park, and covering the likes of Right On, Word Up and Black Beat magazines.
13-year-olds Prodigy, Roc Royal, Ray Ray and Princeton comprise this new boy band, whose infectious single “My Girl” follows in the tradition of songs from predecessors such as The Jackson 5, New Edition and B2K.
Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s 9-year-old rocked everyone’s world with her debut single “Whip My Hair,” which channeled a Rihanna-style party and got the wunderkind signed to a Rihanna-style deal on Jay-Z‘s label.
The 17-year-old Chicago native with Trinidadian roots has burned up dance floors with “Dirty Girl” and won over hearts with “Spending All My Time,” jams that would do Tevin Campbell and Chris Brown justice.
