Taylor Dayne – Soul Dancing [Reviews]

Posted by ThatsMyJamRadio on May 26, 2010

Though it did not earn her the commercial success of preceding albums Tell It to My Heart and Can’t Fight Fate, Taylor Dayne’s Soul Dancing proves that Dayne the Dance Diva has much more to offer in terms of vocal versatility.

The piano-driven ballad “Send Me a Lover” is the perfect example of this, as Taylor begins in her lower ranges before erupting into a controlled delivery that passionately pleads, “Send me a lover, someone to believe in, please send me someone that I can hold.”

Equally emotive but in a style reminiscent of Bonnie Tyler is Dayne’s performance on “I Could Be Good For You.” Here, Taylor lists the pros she can offer to an unnamed lover. The cons of splitting up lead her to “Dance with a Stranger,” which ends up being a thorough explanation of why rebounding will temporarily cure her heartbreak.

Dayne finds a complementing duet partner in Keith Washington on “The Door to Your Heart.” The Diane Warren-penned ballad allows Taylor to demonstrate a rare vulnerability in her voice as she channels raw female emotion on the track. “I’ll Wait” finds her returning to the vulnerability theme, but in subject matter only as she confidently delivers “Well I know what I feel inside, I trust enough, in what my heart tells me.”

As one who embraced dance music in the past, it should come as no surprise that she pays tribute to that part of her career, most notably by paying tribute with her cover of Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love.” The house-infused rhythms continue on anthemic cuts such as “Someone Like You,” “Say a Prayer” and the pulsating title track.

Equal parts soulful pop, dance and adult contemporary, Soul Dancing makes it easy to appreciate what Dayne is capable of doing, as she engages listeners with her one-of-a-kind voice.
